Hi folks, haven't written on here for a bit. Don't worry, I'm going to continue with my series on Hotel and Venue Selection and Negotiations for Model UN Conferences later on. Before I do so, this is a good video I created on how to use the United Nations website for your research. I have also reposted this in the Delegate Resources section. Happy hunting!

Myth: America (aka 'murca) is always right.

Here is a scenario that I've frequently seen at various Model UN conferences in the past:
--Delegate representing the USA goes up to speak--
"The United States of America strongly opposes (enter resolution number here) for these reasons. We believe that the sanctity of democracy and global economic stimulation are not going to be met if this resolution passes. (and so on...)"
--Next unmoderated caucus an overwhelming amount of countries swoon to the US delegate in an effort to contest the speech--

Grow a pair.
Those three simple words will transform you into the biggest nation in the room, whether you be a male or female, the United States or Swaziland. It is a piece of advice that I, in my earlier years as a wee lad, heard often after making mistakes and never took seriously until attending Berkeley MUN.

As a Model United Nations organizer, you are an event planner running an educational event. As such, a core component of your program is the environment in which your simulation exists.

With thousands of Model UN conferences around the world, why the hell would someone want to create another one?

Let me start off by stating that MUN is not simply an organization that simulates the United Nations in order to foster international resolutions to global crises. MUN is a blunt hammer. A hammer that can hurt you badly if you drop it on your foot, or hurt someone else if used improperly. However, MUN is also a tool that one may use to hack away at nails.

The Model UN Experience

We go through life in school trying to figure out what MUN can give us. Delegates waste countless gallons of ink revising resolutions and position papers. Every committee is catered to the needs of a unique issue. Why does it all matter? What possibly can MUN do for you? This entry examines what a student should expect from a successful Model UN program in a school.

Conquering Your First Conference

Do terms like moderated caucuspoint of replyresolutions, and position paper seem foreign to you? If they do then you are probably in the same position that I was in the beginning of my freshman year of high school. I had no idea what these things meant, and I surely did not know how instrumental they would be during committee session. Despite this general naivety, the story of my first conference still sticks out in my mind as one of the defining moments of my MUN career.
